Basic trekking skills course at Patvinsuo National Park

31 August – 1 September

Would you like to go for a day hike or an overnight camping trip but feel uncertain because of lack of experience and knowhow? Have you wondered where to go, what to take with, where to get a tent and how to set it up? Not to mention how to start a campfire? Now there is an opportunity to find out the answers to these questions at the Basic trekking skills course, organized at the Patvinsuo National Park.

The course is meant for beginners, so no previous experience is needed. The course is also available for those who want to deepen their knowledge about trekking.

During the course, trekking skills are learnt by active participations and joint discussions. The topics covered include:

·         Clothing and gear suitable for camping

·         How to move and navigate outdoors

·         Campsite

·         Safety

·         How to plan a trip (ie. National Parks nearby)

·         Food and outdoor cooking

The aim is to prepare the participants with the knowledge and skills needed when camping during three seasons (all others but winter).

The course will be organized near the Patvinsuo National Park service center. We will spend as much time as possible outdoors, but we will take shelter or move indoors should it rain. The Finnish Nature Day will be celebrated at the Patvinsuo National Park during the same weekend, and a Spend the night outdoors event is also organized. You can sleep in a tent, a hammock or in any other kind of a shelter, and indoors accommodation can also be reserved for an extra fee. The indoors accommodation has to be reserved separately, for more information see the event description for Spend the night outdoors 31 August 2019. In the evening there is a possibility to go to a classical lakeside sauna.

The course starts at Patvinsuo on Saturday at 11 am and it ends on Sunday early afternoon. For the Joensuun  Latu members the course fee is 30 euros, and 50 euros for others. The course is available for a maximum of 15 participants. Further information will be sent to the participants regarding the arrangements prior to the course.
